Shuk Hotel

The Shuk Hotel was initially inspired by the indigenous rock structure, the ‘Inuksuk’. The Inuit structure was used in the Arctic, acting as a symbol for a reference point/ landmark for travellers and marking the location converying nearby settlements and an area for good hunting or fishing. There is a variety of inuksuk (s) around North America, yet one common aspect was the notion of stacking and their method of construction. Stacking rocks upon each other and keeping them stable for as long as possible is an art of it’s own, which I embodied in this project. Incorporating the idea of stacking into the building structure, gives a sense of instability and provides a dynamic template for the hotel in order to create various programming.
